ORTEC makes high purity germanium radiation detectors, nuclear instrumentation, analysis software and turn-key spectroscopy systems for homeland security, nuclear counting laboratories, health physics, safeguards and waste assay. The company says it was founded in 1960 by a group of scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to provide a commercial source of research-grade silicon surface-barrier charged-particle detectors; it began as the Oak Ridge Technical Enterprise Corporation, and the name was shortened to ORTEC in the late 1960s.
