Profile

Kromek designs radiation detectors and biological-threat detection systems, and supplies cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector components used in medical and security imaging. It began in 2003 as Durham Scientific Crystals, a spin-out from Durham University, and took the name Kromek in 2008.

More profile

It is headquartered in Sedgefield, County Durham, has been listed on London's AIM since 2013, and has US operations through the 2010 purchase of NOVA R&D in California and the 2013 purchase of eV Products in Pennsylvania. Its CBRN products include compact handheld and wearable radiation detectors such as the D3S-ID, which the company says protect infrastructure, events and urban areas from radiological dispersal devices.

In July 2025 it announced its first contract under the UK Government's Radiological Nuclear Detection Framework, worth 1.7 million pounds, for D3S-ID wearable detectors with training and maintenance for the Home Office. Its biological-threat work includes multi-year contracts with a UK Government agency and the US Department of Homeland Security, and an 18-month 0.25 million pound contract from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

In 2025 it also signed agreements with Siemens Healthineers, including an enablement agreement paying 37.5 million dollars in instalments, of which 32.5 million dollars had been received by September 2026. For the year to 30 April 2026 it reported revenue of 27.1 million pounds, of which CBRN detection was 7.3 million pounds, up 17 per cent.
