More profile

The company was founded in 1998 by former United Nations Special Commission biological weapons inspectors and scientists from the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda. Its website lists laboratory staff, veterinarians, first responders and clinicians as users of its products and says it works with government agencies.

Its BioThreat Alert lateral flow assays for agents such as ricin and anthrax were evaluated by the US Department of Homeland Security, with the ricin study announced on 6 June 2013 and the anthrax study published in Health Security in September and October 2016. The company says it offers the first FDA-cleared test kit for identifying Bacillus anthracis from colonies, and its news archive records the clearance in December 2003.

In October 2014 an industry report said the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate had given it a sole-source contract to continue developing lateral flow assays covering nine biothreat targets. In February 2023 it announced a partnership with the US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to supply African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease PCR test kits.

In September 2026 Tetracore and VMRD announced that VMRD had bought Tetracore's animal health products; orders continue to ship from Tetracore's facility during the transition.
