Profile

Ludlum Measurements designs and manufactures radiation detection instruments, including survey meters, area monitors and portal monitors. It was incorporated on 14 February 1962 in Sweetwater, Texas, by a former employee of another radiation instrument maker, who started in the kitchen of his house.

More profile

The first design became the Model 3 Survey Meter, which the company still lists among its best-selling instruments. Ludlum says its instruments are used for routine personnel and material monitoring, border security and emergency response, and it repairs and calibrates instruments of other makes as well as its own.

It has grown partly through acquisitions: ADIT (photomultiplier tubes) in 1992, Protean Instrument (alpha-beta counting systems, Knoxville) in 2011, Ludlum GmbH in Hamburg, formerly James Fisher Nuclear Hamburg, in 2020, and VPI Technology (Utah) in 2023. A 2015 report by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory describes more than 1,400 portal monitor systems from Ludlum and Leidos deployed on the US border under US Customs and Border Protection, with Ludlum 4500-series monitors forming part of them.

In June 2025 the Department of Veterans Affairs' Southeast Network placed a purchase order worth up to $12,593 for Ludlum radiation survey meters. In October 2025 a distributor reported two new tritium instruments, the Model 3102 series tritium-in-air monitors and the Model 336 tritium in air collector.
